The maximum allowable continuous power dissipation at any ambient temperature is calculated by D(MAX)=(TJ(MAX)-TA)/θJA. Exceeding the maximum allowable power dissipation will produce an excessive die temperature, causing the regulator to go into thermal shutdown.
